poem theory versus practice poem by Hugh Cook of

Levitational Hedgehogs

The levitational hedgehogs
Float free from the mundane universe,
The pure blue freedoms
Of theory.
For the levitational hedgehog
There is no corresponding
Levitational slug.

Why does the hedgehog levitate?
The answer
Is the emperor.

The emperor dragonizes the hedgehogs
Until they float
Ascending to the realm
Of expectations.
The emperor summons faith to serve as fact.
Is his divine skill.
The hedgehogs, levitational,
Are the proof.

The emperor
Conquers gravity by denial.
And we, inspired,
Are keen to follow suit.
Theory will set us free.
Is there to be transcended.
We trust the plan, and trust
The elephant, when asked,
Will walk on water.

Author's Note

The term "levitational hedgehogs" first enterered the poet's consciousness after his website mysteriously took a hit from someone searching the Internet for the term "levitational hedgehog." Can hedgehogs really levitate? Well, it would probably be unwise to contradict the emperor on this, at least in public.
